Here is a very attractive portfolio created for
the American Bicentennial about 30 years
ago. The folio includes several pages
of pictures and text ( very detailed
information filled with much interesting
trivia ) along with a mint block of four
stamps, featuring Salem Poor.
Revolutionary War hero and African
American who fought with such bravery
at Bunker Hill in 1775 that Colonel William
Prescott and 13 other American officers
commended him to the Continental
Congress ( not to be confused with Peter
Salem, 1751-1816, Afro-American
Revolutionary War hero from Framingham,
Massachusetts ). As a black slave he was
freed after fighting at both Lexington and
Concord. It was Salem who is
credited with killing the British
commander, Major John Pitcairn,
( at the battle of Bunker Hill ) .
