One could say this is the saddest story of a great philatelic ( stamp ) discovery.
The 4 ¢ stamp, depicting the late Secretary General of the United Nations,
Dag Hammarskjold was put on sale on October 23rd 1962.
Due to registration problems during the printing process, each sheet was
required to go through the Giori press twice. Apparently a sheet was fed in
backwards resulting in a white band color shift. The owner of this sheet
immediately informed the philatelic world of his tremendous find.
And so, the US Post Office decided to cleverly take out the scarcity of this
single item ( and perhaps cover up their big mistakes at the same time ) by
producing the remaining run as errors . On November 16 of that same year,
these new Postal Service created errors were unleashed onto the public .
This was the first occurrence of a Postally created error.
We offer these deliberately created errors along with a regular stamp
of the same issue, both in mint condition.
