In World War II, after the German invasion of the Netherlands ( 10 May 1940 ),
the government including the Queen escaped to England, but stamps were still
required to move the mails. Unlike the times before the War, where more
heroic topics were shown on stamps, now more neutral subjects had to be
depicted in order not to offend the German conquerors.
And so, this rather subdued part series of 7 stamps was issued
in 1943 - 1944 with subjects that included; seahorse ( 1c ), 3 tiered tree ( 1.5c ),
swans ( 2c ), the tree of life (2.5c ), tree with snake roots ( 3c ), man on
horseback ( 4c ) & prancing white horses ( 5c)
Naturally at the close of the war in 1945, with the return of Queen Wilhelmina,
she once again began to appear on the stamps of the Netherlands.
Offered here is the mint set of seven stamps issued
during the occupation of the Netherlands.
