Here is a spectacular set of two ( 2 ) mint stamps issued by New Zealand
during World War II featuring the two ( 2 ) 'pretty princesses of England',
Elizabeth & her sister Margaret Rose. As the children of a younger son of
King George V, the young Elizabeth ( and her sister Margaret ) had little
prospect of acceding to the throne until their uncle, Edward VIII
( later Duke of Windsor), abdicated in their father's favor on December 11,
1936, at which time the father became King George VI
and she ( they ) became heir ( s ) to the throne.
During World War II, she and her sister, Princess Margaret Rose,
spent much of their time safely away from the German bombing raids on
London and from their parents, living mostly at Balmoral Castle in Scotland,
from where they are pictured on these stamps. Besides the
regular values of 1 & 2 pennies, these stamps each have
surcharges to be donated for 'health'.
On February 6, 1952. Elizabeth, now queen, learned of her father's death
and returned to England to become Queen on June 2, 1953.
