The English island of Jersey ( largest of the Channel Islands ) lies a mere 45 miles from Cherbourg ( one of France's major harbor towns ) and about 70 miles from England. After conquering France, the Nazis, thought for sure that England would surrender, but they were quickly told by Churchill that under not circumstance would they give in to the Germans.
On the last day of June in 1940 the Germans invaded and set up an attack base on the island of Jersey. This was the closest place to England that the Germans were able to conquer. Within the year a new postal issue was printed for the carriage of the mails. The first new 1/2 pence postage stamp was officially released on 29 January, 1942. Featured here is an actual First Day Cover each franked with two 1/2 pence green stamps ( making the full rate of One Pence for the local rate ) postmarked on the First Day of Issuance of these new stamps. This is a unique group of envelopes from the German Occupation of Jersey. |
