The most famous sales area, Spitalfields Market ( covered fruit &
vegetable ), was owned by the City of London. It was in operation for
250 years before being destroyed by fire in 1972. The name itself was
derived from the fact that a medieval hospital ( sptal ) stood at this
very location. Featured here are several different metal checks or
tokens used at Dorsett & Son at Spitalfields. On occasion when small
change was not available in the English monetary system,
these tokenswere used as tradable currency.

Offered are the following:

2 sided, 2 Shillings oval, in a shiny copper color

Single sided rectangular, 20 Shilling in gold color

Six Pence ( represented by the letter "D" for denarius - to signify
the smallest denomination, as in penny or pence ), hole - punch
cancelled with the letter "D" ( for Dorsett )
