Presented here are the official bank receipts, all from the Netherlands Bank of South Africa (Pretoria Branch).
his year of 1920 was most significant as the year that the Central Reserve Bank of South Africa was established (at Pretoria, as well). Each receipt is fully documented in both English and Afrikaner noting dates, sums, interest rates etc. As these fixed deposit receipts were like money, they often served as a medium of exchange in this period before the formal issuance of banknotes by the Central Reserve Bank in 1922. Oftentimes the 'redeemer' of the principal & interest was different from the original depositor who may have passed the note on. These unusual examples of bank related history measure approximately 11.5 x 6.5 inches or 30 x 16 centimeters, all in relatively nice condition.
