Featured here are the full color posters announcing the A & P Tennis Classic Championship which took place July 14 - 21, 1996 at the Sheraton Crossroad in Mahwah, New Jersey. Depicted in full color ( in front of the A & P logo sign ) is the 1992 champion, Monica Seles in a typical tennis pose.
Monica Seles, born ( 1973 ) in Serbia, is a professional tennis player, who first achieved major success while still a teenager. Although she won the European junior championship at the age of ten, she moved to the USA in 1986, and in 1989 turned professional. In 1990 she won the French Open, and in each of the following two years she won the Australian, US, and French opens. Seles won the Australian Open in early 1993, but later that year, while resting between sets during a tournament in Hamburg, Germany, she was violently stabbed by a spectator. The incident caused Seles to withdraw from all competitions in 1993 and 1994. She returned to the game in 1995 and won the initial tournament of her comeback, the Canadian Open. In 1996 she again took the Australian Open.
