Albert Goodwill Spalding ( 9/2/1850 - 9/9/1915 ) was the American professional
baseball player ( the first pitcher to win more than 200 games ) and sporting-
goods manufacturer ( founded in 1876 ), who contributed most to the
development of professional baseball.
1882 was a most significant year, as AG Spalding retired from the game,
but became president of the Chicago Club in that same year. And it was exactly
100 years later that Satchel Paige ( the greatest pitcher in baseball ) died.
So, it is fitting that 1882 is the year of this select group of newspapers from
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, all of which have some relationship to the
budding American sport of 'baseball'
All of these select examples are in generally very nice condition.
