Although this is nothing more than a lowly 'extra' for what may
have been an important or expensive check, it none-the-less recites
an interesting part of financial history, as it was banked to
Wells Fargo & Co. ( an exceedingly important institution of the time,
one that certainly commanded attention in the banking world ). As shown on the picture in actual size each is printed in black with red check number.
Each is in crisp unused condition with two small staple holes on the left edge.

Proclaimed the "eighth wonder of the world", a bridge spanning the East River
between Brooklyn and New York City opened with a public celebration on May
24, 1883. With two 276-foot ( 84 meter ) stone towers and a span of 1,595
feet ( 486 meters ), the steel-cabled Brooklyn Bridge was designed by John A.
Roebling and his son, Washington A. Roebling, who took over the project but
became bedridden in 1872 when he contracted the bends, from spending too
much time in the underground caissons used to build the bridges foundations.
Roebling directed the last 11 years of construction from his bed overlooking
the site, with his wife, engineer Emily Roebling managed the project on-site.
It cost $16 million and its hazardous working conditions claimed 26 lives.

**Wells Fargo played an important and dramatic part in the expansion of the
American frontier. In 1859 an enormous silver deposit that has been called
the greatest bonanza in the history of the world was discovered at Virginia City,
Nevada. Miners at the Comstock Lode literally shoveled silver out of the
ground in the form of "blue dirt". Wells Fargo, which had taken over the
Pioneer Stage Line had the monopoly on carrying the silver from the
Comstock and later banking the receipts in San Francisco
at its offices on Montgomery Street.

In addition, it had the monopoly on carrying goods and passengers to and from the Lode, from which alone it made more than a million dollars a year.
