Featured here are checks signed by the mayor of New York City in 1827,
William Paulding & countersigned by comptroller and clerk.

At this time the city was in its great period of expansion after the completion of
the Erie Canal in 1825 ($8 million state-owned canal, which was 363 miles long,
40 feet wide, and 4 feet deep, with tow paths for the mules that pull barges up
and down its length at 1 mile per hour - freight rates dropped immediately from
$100 per ton to $5). The canal, which linked the Hudson River to Lake Erie,
opened the tremendous markets of the west, and New York became a major
center of commodity exchange, banking, marine insurance,
and manufacturing.Immigrants, particularly Irish, German, Jewish,
and Italian, began to arrive in large numbers.

Also of note was New York's abolition of slavery on July 4, 1827.

All checks are in very fine condition with cross cancel.
