Featured here are checks signed by the mayor of New York City in 1824,
Stephan Allen, countersigned by comptroller and clerk.
Stephan Allen started out as an apprentice sail - maker during the American
Revolution and after going into business for himself, he managed to amass a
fortune ( $100,000 ) by selling direct ( cutting out the middlemen ).
He was a staunch Jeffersonian and later became
President of the Mechanics Bank. He served 3 terms
as Mayor of new York City ( 1821 - 1824 ). He died during
the burning of the steamship " Henry Clay".
