$5 - Christopher Gustavus Memminger ( 1803 - 1888 )

Christopher Gustavus Memminger was born in Wurttemberg, Germany and as a child moved to America. He studied at South Carolina College and went on to become a lawyer in Charleston in 1825, later entering politics as leader of the Union Party. For 20 years he was in the state legislature, often serving on the finance committee. During the secession of the Southern States he became secretary of the treasury to the CSA ( 1861 - 1864 ) and appears on the 5 Dollar denomination notes issued by the CSA along with the Capitol of the Southern States ( Virginia State Capitol in Richmond ). All of these banknotes showing Memminger are hand signed ( for the Register and the Treasurer ) and numbered ( dated April 6th 1863 ).
