Carinthia ( Kärnten ) is an ancient region in what is now Austria and issued it
first piece of paper money on 11/11/1918 after the end of World War I.
Below are some interesting details in the history of this region;
Charles III, called Charles the Fat ( 839 - 888 ) as Holy Roman emperor,
king of the Germans and king of the French
( great-grandson of Charlemagne ) was deposed from his thrones in 887
by his nephew, Arnulf, duke of Kärnten ( Carinthia ).
Later the German boy-king Otto III is seized by the deposed duke of Bavaria,
Henry the Quarrelsome, who was defeated and dethroned
by Otto II in 976 and forced to give up Carinthia and Verona.
Rudolf I of Habsburg ( 1218 - 1291 ), German king and Holy Roman emperor;
was the first Habsburg to hold the royal title. In 1278 he defeated Ottokar
with Hungarian aid at the Battle of Durnkurt, acquiring as a result
Austria, Styria, Kärnten ( Carinthia ), and Carniola.
These territories, previously held by the Bohemian king, became
the center of the future Habsburg state.
Louis of Bavaria acquires the Tyrol and Carinthia by marrying
the 'ugly duchess' Margaret of Tyrol in 1342.
Matthias I, 1458-1490 ruler of Bohemia, captured Vienna in 1485
and annexed Austria, Styria, Carinthia.
Jakob Fugger II earned more than 200,000 gulden per year in the 1490's
by selling silver from mines he leases in Carinthia.
The Ottoman forces of Suleiman II invade Hungary in 1532,
but Carinthia repels the attackers.
As a matter of geographical reference, Austria's highest mountain
( 3797 meters or 12,457 feet ) called Grossglockner
lies on the border between Tyrol and Carinthia.
