Between December 20, 1860, and February 1, 1861, six southern states
declared their withdrawal ( secession ) from the United States.
On February 4, at Montgomery, Alabama., they organized a separate and
independent government called the Confederate States of America ( CSA ) .
The states that set up this government were South Carolina, Mississippi,
Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. A seventh state, Texas,
was admitted to the confederation on March 2.
Christopher Gustavus Memminger ( 1803 - 1888 ) was born in
Wurttemberg, Germany and as a child moved to America.
He studied at South Carolina College and went
on to become a lawyer in Charleston in 1825, later entering politics
as leader of the Union Party. For 20 years he was in the state legislature,
often serving on the finance committee. During the secession of the
Southern States he became secretary of the treasury to the
CSA ( 1861 - 1864 ) and appears on the 5 Dollar denomination
notes issued by the CSA along with the Capitol of the
Southern States ( Virginia State Capitol in Richmond ).
All of these banknotes showing Memminger are hand signed
( for the Register and the Treasurer ) and numbered ( dated April 6th 1863 ).
In fine very fine condition.
