Saccharin has about 500 times the sweetening power of granulated
sugar. It was discovered by the Constantin Fahlberg and his professor
Remsen in 1879. Fahlberg went on to create the world's first factory
producing the commercially available artificial sweetener, called
Saccharin. The German city of Magdeburg (east-central part of the
country by the Elbe River ) was famous for being the birthplace of
such notables as the physicist Otto von Guericke, composer Georg
Telemann, the American Colonial hero Frederick William,
Baron von Steuben and the Fahlberg's factory.
Here are examples of factory money ( in this case worth 5 & 10 German
pfennig ) from this first Saccharin factory, all in almost uncirculated condition.
