The designs were subject to scrutiny by a national technical and artistic committee before being presented to the nation on RAI uno ( largest TV station ). A different design ( masterpieces by Italy's greatest artists ) is featured for each denomination.
This depicts a portrait drawn by Raphaël of Dante Alighieri, housed in the Pope Julius II Wing of the Vatican Palace. Edge lettering of the 2 euro coin: 2 *, repeated six times, alternately upright and inverted.

5 Cents: Flavius amphitheatre, begun by Emperor Vespasian around 75 AD and inaugurated by Titus in 80 AD

50 Cents: Statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius on horseback
