PROOF & PROOFLIKE COINS
Originally, proofs were intended as pre - production samples for checking and approval the by the minters, government officials or to present to special guests etc. and as such proof & prooflike coins are produced to a much higher standard than regular circulating coinage.

Proof coins show the raised portion of the design to have a matt finish and the flat background as having a highly polished shiny mirror finish. The coin blanks are often hand fed into the striking press and are some times double ( or more ) struck at slow coining speeds, thus giving the piece a more detailed and sharper look.
